"Nephaster cyaneus (Cloudstar)"
by J. D. McClatchy

The sudden brightness at a nova's heart
Predicts a gradual, dimming ebb and flow
Of light — or love — that will in time depart,
Remembered only as desire's afterglow.
O dark mysterious flower, guard this night.
Keep her now from morning's cold insight.

This poem was written to title and accompany the painting in the book
Another Language of Flowers (New York: George Braziller 1998).
